چکیده

Background Aortic stiffness is an important risk factor in the development of cardiovascular disease. Early detection of stiffening is important so that appropriate medical and behavioural interventions can be implemented. Applanation tonometry pulse wave velocity is the current non-invasive reference standard but this only provides spatially-averaged measurements. Local measurements may be more important, particularly in the ascending aorta due to aorto-ventricular coupling effects. MRE usually requires a surface transducer to generate shear waves in the tissues but these are expensive, uncomfortable and not available in all centres. The aim of this study was to develop a new transducer-free MRE sequence to measure aortic stiffness in vivo using aortic valve closure, an intrinsic source for elastography, to generate shear waves in the aortic wall.

Quantification of aortic stiffness across the cardiac cycle using magnetic resonance elastography

Background The measurement of arterial stiffness has long been a reliable method of determining the severity and risk involved with many cardiovascular diseases [1]. Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE), a non-invasive MRI-based technique, has recently been applied to measure aortic stiffness [2]. The aim of this study is to determine MRE-derived shear stiffness (μMRE) of the abdominal aorta o...

Quantification of aortic stiffness using MR elastography and its comparison to MRI-based pulse wave velocity.

PURPOSE To determine the correlation in abdominal aortic stiffness obtained using magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) (μ(MRE)) and MRI-based pulse wave velocity (PWV) shear stiffness (μ(PWV)) estimates in normal volunteers of varying age, and also to determine the correlation between μ(MRE) and μ(PWV). MATERIALS AND METHODS In vivo aortic MRE and MRI were performed on 21 healthy volunteers ...

MR elastography as a method to estimate aortic stiffness and its comparison against MR based pulse wave velocity measurement

Background Arterial (aortic) stiffness is a well-recognized pathophysiological change that plays a significant role in the determination of risk factors for various cardiovascular diseases [1]. Measurement of arterial stiffness using pulse wave velocity (PWV) is the gold standard among non-invasive modalities. Recently, a novel non-invasive MRI based technique known as magnetic resonance elasto...

In vivo determination of hepatic stiffness using steady-state free precession magnetic resonance elastography.

OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to introduce an magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) protocol based on fractional motion encoding and planar wave acquisition for rapid measurements of in vivo human liver stiffness. MATERIALS AND METHODS Vibrations of a remote actuator membrane were fed by a rigid rod to the patient's surface beneath the right costal arch resulting in axial shear de...
